A direct replacement for the carbon pre-filter in the 115115 Filter A set, sized 12 by 16 in so it drops into the frame without trimming.

WHAT THE PRE-FILTER ACTUALLY DOES
Two jobs, and the second one is why it matters. Activated carbon reduces the cooking, pet and household odors that circulate through the room. At the same time the pad captures the hair, lint and dust that would otherwise land on the HEPA behind it. A HEPA loaded with pet hair is a HEPA you replace early, and the pre-filter costs a fraction of what the HEPA does.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED
The HEPA filter is a separate part. This listing is the carbon pre-filter only, which is the piece you change several times for every HEPA change. Some sets bundle both, so check what you are replacing before you order.

ALSO FITS A STANDARD RETURN VENT
At 12 by 16 in these are also a common cold air return size. If you have a return vent that size, the same pad lays over the opening under the grate and captures dust and lint before it recirculates. Pull it if a vent whistles or airflow drops in that room.

WHEN TO CHANGE IT
Every three months is the usual guidance, more often with pets, a smoker, or heavy cooking. The pre-filter should be changed several times for every HEPA change - that is the point of it. If the pad looks grey and matted, it has already done its work.
